2020 Koonowla Rosé

Rosé is all about pure refreshment and enjoyment – the perfect reflection of Australia’s spring and summer lifestyle. A wine for fun and friends, for the sun deck, the beach, the great outdoors and of course for just about every style of casual cuisine imaginable.

The Clare Valley has established a global reputation for dynamic wines which thrive in the region’s unique landscape, geology and climate – riesling being its number one ambassador. The same conditions are perfectly suited to specifically growing certain red grapes for similarly styled fresh and sprightly rosé wines.

Our place
Koonowla is one of the Clare Valley’s thriving treasures, an extraordinary homestead and estate with sweeping grounds, a historic gravity fed winery under refurbishment, and significant vineyard pedigree going back to the 1890s.

It is an outstanding showcase for the region’s southern gateway district of Auburn, with cellar door and function venue attractions supporting our exciting portfolio of contemporary wines.

Koonowla has a long and fruitful history of making an enjoyable fruity version of the classic merlot grape, and it makes perfect sense to now celebrate that tradition with a contemporary rosé wine.

Our Rosé
Just west of the Auburn township, our estate vineyard is set on a southern-facing, rocky site that is perfect for nurturing cool climate fruit characters in both red and white varieties.

Our rosé is a distinctive, fresh style made from merlot that has been managed in the vineyard specifically to express amazing flavour while still retaining palate excitement and aromatic lift.

Merlot, in fact, works a treat in this style, a softer, plumper red wine grape that when picked at just the right rosé ripeness gives you great flavour with a vivacious personality, further enhanced in the winery without any oak maturation and overt winemaking influence.
